Interpersonal communication is the process of people exchanging messages in relationships. Ranging from role relationships, to interpersonal relationships, to close and intimate relationships, each one of our interactions contribute to the formation, strengthening or weakening of relationships. Through these interactions and relationships, people fulfill the main interpersonal needs, consisting of social inclusion, affection and behavioral control. By exploring communication theories, such as social identity theory, self-expansion theory, uncertainty reduction theory and expectancy violation theory, I learned more about myself, as well as my relationships and surroundings. Further developing identity, in the self-expansion theory, identity is formed as we develop closer, deeper relationships. I chose to apply theories associated with identity because they are relevant in our everyday lives. Identity perceptions of ourselves derive from our relationships and our surroundings. If we did not engage in interpersonal interactions with others, we would be less aware of ourselves and ou r associations with our surroundings. In order to deepen the knowledge of identities, it is necessary to experience different perspectives through varying interactions and communication styles. Along with these theories regarding self-identity and identity management, changes in perceived identities can cause uncertainty in some relationships. The research data was derived from married, divorced and separated couples that had recently migrated from Ethiopia to Toronto. The aim of the study was to find out the changes in the lives of new Ethiopian immigrant couples and the impact the migration had on the change in their marital relationship. For the first phase participants had to be Ethiopian immigrants who were married or living together pre-migration. Both partners had to give their consent for the process. The second phase targeted couples that separated or divorced post-migration. Various methods were used to attract participants such as newspaper ads, flyers at Ethiopians social events, word of mouth and so on. Participants for the first phase were easier to recruit compared to those of the second phase. Honorarium was given for participation; $50 (phase 1) and $75 (phase 2). Data was collected through interviews and demographic questionnaires. The survey also included the past of the pair preceding migration. Two Amharic-speaking Ethiopians, trained in research (male and female) assisted in data collection. This was commendable in order to overcome any language barrier. The participants were given a choice as to who should interview them whether, male or female. However, according to the report a pre-test indicated that the participants did not give preference to any particular sex. The participants were interviewed separately so that the presence of the other spouse could not influence their response. After analyzing, the data collected from the interviews focus groups were formed according to sex. The aim of the focus groups was to verify or refute the findings of the data collected. Focus groups were however, not conducted for separated or divorced couples. The Ethiopian community associated some kind of stigma due to divorce. This was evident due to the low turn up of divorced couples. All the interviews and focus group debates were put on audio tape, written down and interpreted into English. As Caroline is on complete bed rest following the bowel resection with LLQ ileostomy formation, she has been prescribed Enoxaparin to prevent blood clot in the leg. A low-molecular weight heparin drugs inhibit the function of substance that cause blood clotting (Laulicht 2013). As Caroline wants to self-administer the medication, she needs to be educated about the appropriate way to inject the drug. The education plan is to teach her regarding injecting the drug subcutaneously in the stomach area and she needs to take the medication at the same time each day. The instructing to be followed while self-administering Enoxaparin includes washing the hands with soap and water and then lying down in a comfortable position. Then, the patient needs to select an area on the right or left side stomach 2 inches below the belly button. The area should be cleaned with an alcohol swab and the pinch of fold should be created in the cleaned area. The patient need to press the needle straight down into the skin fold and then pulled out straight. CNS opioid receptors with opioid like activities contribute to the analgesic effect of the drug (Thibault 2014). Caroline is vulnerable to mal-absorption of drug due to the ileostomy. Hence, in order to facilitate the absorption process of medication, Caroline must use the tablet or capsule after opening or crushing it. Another major problem that can arise for Caroline while taking this medication is constipation. This is because narcotic analgesics like Oxycodone slow down the intestinal peristalsis process leading to constipation (Naeger 2014). T herefore, to reduce the chance of this side-effect, Caroline needs to drink lot of fluid. High fiber food will also help to relieve constipation in the patient. Paracetamol has been prescribed for Caroline post discharge to relieve pain. There are many side effect associated with NSAIDs drug (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) such as bloody stool, rashes and cloudy urine. It may create risk of stomach upset and internal bleeding in Caroline. In such scenario, the patient will educated about the side effect and encouraged to prevent the complications by taking lot of high-fiber diet. Drinking lot of fluid will also help to prevent any complications due to the drug (Thomas and Margolin 2016).
